The first step in dog training is teaching your dog to sit. To begin this process, it is important to start when the dog is just a puppy, or as soon as it gets settled into its new home. Why do I need to train a puppy to sit? you might ask. After all, doesn’t a dog already know how to sit? If you keep reading, you’ll learn why this early training is important, as well as exactly how to train a dog to sit.

1. The first step is to get your puppy to sit on his own. Be observant and whenever you see him about to sit, say the word ’sit’; eventually he will come to associate the word with his action. This method is also useful in other areas of training.

2. Find the dog a delectable treat and place one in your hand. The puppy should be able to swallow the treat quickly and easily so be sure it is small.

3. Being on the same level as the dog is less threatening to him, so get down on the floor with him, so that you are at his level. Make sure that you sit close to him — that way you will be able to provide your dog with his reward more quickly.

4. Bring the treat over your puppy’s head gradually. Remember that your dog has a keen sense of smell and his nose will naturally follow the path of the treat. As the treat is moving from the front of him to the back, he can do one of two things to keep following it. He will either back up while still on his feet or he’ll sit down. Sitting down is easier and this is what most dogs will do.

5. It is important in training that a correct response be followed immediately by a reward. As the dog begins to sit, say the word ’sit’, and quickly give him his treat.

6. Now shower your dog with praise so he knows he did a good thing.

7. This is something you could continue to practice 3-5 times a day. Don’t over do it though, as moderation is important, unless you are able to make these steps as fun for the dog as they are for you.

8. Next, try the same things while standing. See if your dog reacts to the word “sit” even if you don’t use your hand or offer a treat. If he sits, praise him for sitting, but if he doesn’t, don’t worry about it. During training it’s important not to show any disappoint to the dog.

You need to keep practicing this so that your dog your dog will learn to sit when you tell him to no matter what’s happening around him. This is something you’ll have to keep working at for the rest of his life. He will constantly be faced with new situations, strange people, other dogs, and different environments, and you can use each new experience as a way to challenge him to reach greater heights.

See how easy learning how to train a dog to sit is? When you go through these traiing steps you are doing much more than just teaching your dog how to sit. All dogs, wheter adults or Puppies love to interact with their master so training is a great bonding experience. Plus he will get used to hearing his name and being obedient to your commands. This will enforce your title of leader and make the puppy feel secure which is what he really wants in the first place.

Despite the untold millions of pet owners in the U.S., a huge percentage of them do not have any form of pet insurance; strange when you consider how attached people become to their animals and treating them like family members. We don’t hesitate to purchase health insurance for ourselves; should we be forgiven for not caring enough about our pets then?

This is an often overlooked area and thought to be superfluous by some; this attitude quickly changes when these pet owners are presented with the bills for treatment. No area is immune for price increases and vets fees are no exception; pet insurance providers have, therefore, increased their premiums.

If rising costs to protect your pet are not enough to convince you, there are others to consider. The problem is that domestic animals are often more liable to be involved in an accident or become sick; when this happens, the cost of treatment may even cause financial strain.

If you are in this unenviable position then a choice may have to be made; the last thing you want to think about is how you will pay for your animal to have urgent treatment.

I had doubts about treating our dog some time ago when he was involved in an accident; I have to admit to asking myself at the time if we could justify the expense. To make matters worse, there is always a chance you pet still won’t survive; however, you will still have to pay for the cost of treatment.

The financial strain of keeping your pet healthy can be overwhelming; this is even more relevant if you are experiencing financial difficulties. If you are experiencing money worries then raising additional finances can prove embarrassing.

When money is a problem, you are more likely to give your pet the bare-minimum of care; a pet insurance plan will mean this type of situation does not occur again. The choice is yours, large vet bills or a pet healthcare insurance policy; the average monthly premium will be less than forty dollars.

Many different healthcare insurance options are available for your pet; this can even extend to offering multi-pet discounts. Pet owners providing a health plan for their pets is not the luxury you may think it is; perhaps the information supplied here has made things are a little clearer now and you won’t delay further.

Introduction

by Floella McFee

Introduction

The cause of shyness in dogs may be simply its personality. Sadly though, a dog that has been abused, will demonstrate behaviours that are ultra- submissive, such as excessive urination. As dogs are sociable animals, they do like to know where they stand in relation to the rest of their immediate social group: they are naturally part of a hierarchical pack; therefore any activity that involves socialisation will help to boost confidence.

Dog Training Activities

As dogs are sociable, logically any activity that involves positive forms of socialisation will go a long way to improve confidence. Classes in obedience and agility are ideal for this, particularly as exercise is a great stress reliever for both pet and owner. Whilst training for agility does involve a lot of equipment, it need not be expensive as this can be improvised using household items. The purpose is to improve confidence, and this will be achieved through the positive system of praise and treats that is generally associated with these types of actives. Set aside regular times for this; at least 30 minutes broken into 10 to 15 minute bursts.

Shy of People?

If dog is nervous around people, have a friend help out with gradual desensitization. The friend should not make any bold moves: basically anything that might appear potentially threatening to the dog, particularly do not look the dog directly in the eye. Slowly allow the dog to investigate the friend, with the aid of treats held in the hand, use a low stance, and a calm and measured tone of voice. Once the friend can look directly at the dog without any adverse reaction, then physical contact can be made via petting, such as gently rubbing the chest. Attending classes in obedience and agility are also a good way to stimulate social interaction with other dogs and owners

Good Owner Behaviour

However, all this will be as naught if you do not recognise your own bad behaviour. A dog is a dog; Fido cannot be blamed for raiding the bin if you leave the lid off. Do not blame Fido for chewing your favourite shoes if you leave them where he can get at them. Also be aware that dogs communicate strongly through body language: upright postures are read as very domineering, so get down to Fido’s level. Always talk in calm and measured tones as extremes pitch are upsetting for sensitive dogs. Above all, never be abusive: if you don’t like to be beaten and shouted at, imagine how it feels to poor old Fido!

Conclusion

Never be abusive to your dog as a method of teaching (or at any other time), as this type of treatment may have lead to confidence problems in the first place. In many ways, dogs are similar to children. Confidence in dogs comes with praise and gentle instruction. Follow this method and your dog will definitely feel much better about his life, and your house won’t smell quite so bad!

by Martin. L. Willliams

Dog kennel cough is named variously like canine cough, infectious tracheobronchitis and bordetellosis. Both bacteria and viruses have been found to cause dog kennel cough. It is a condition in which a dog’s windpipe and upper bronchi are damaged and irritated due to the action of infectious microorganisms.

Nature Of Dog Kennel Cough

The lining of the windpipe and bronchi of a dog suffering from dog kennel cough are damaged by a bacterial and/or viral infection, exposing nerve endings which become irritated when air passes over them as the dog breathes in and out. This causes the primary symptom of the illness, a dry, coarse, hacking cough which the dog usually develops within about a week of the initial infection.

Severity And Duration Of The Disease

The majority of dog kennel cough cases tend to be mild and aren’t detrimental to the dog’s overall well being. Typically it does not present a fever or cause loss of appetite; however the cough presents itself throughout the day with the dog coughing every few minutes. Most cases will clear within one to three weeks without using medication, though antibiotics can often speed the healing process.

Transmission Of The Disease

Dog kennel cough transmits much like the human cold. The germs that cause kennel cough is carried in the air and inhaled in the air by other dogs. This causes the infection. This is common especially in dogs that are susceptible to the microbes. Even though any dog anywhere can be affected by this disease, it is common when there are multiple dogs infected in a kennel.

How to Treat Kennel Cough

While antibiotics are sometimes prescribed to treat a case of dog kennel cough, most dogs recover on their own. However, as the illness is accompanied by a persistent and bothersome cough, a veterinarian will often recommend cough-suppressing drugs to help the dog deal with that.

A dog that is not frequently in contact with other dogs already has a low chance of catching kennel cough. It is important to have the dog examined by a vet because symptoms similar to kennel cough are also caused by other serious respiratory diseases. In case of vaccination, the dog should be given the vaccine at least a few weeks before taking it to a dog show or out in the company of other dogs. Vaccinating the dog against infectious organisms may prevent dog kennel cough.

by Melissa Coleman

In spite of its unique characteristics, for some reason the Chinese Shar Pei was deemed to be dangerous and thus was being slowly driven to extinction by the Chinese Communists until the brave efforts of some Hong Kong breeders and a few Americans saved them and made them a very popular breed that today is much sought after by dog lovers all over the world. Thus, today this unique breed that has a wrinkled look and which has the face much like that of a hippo is readily available for dog lovers to own

Chinese Shar Pei’s are very compact animals that have muscular bodies and a square appearance that along with a blocky head makes it a very unique looking breed, partly because its face is very much like that of a hippopotamus. The Shar Pei can weigh about fifty-five pounds at most and it moves with strength and balance and there is a good rear-end drive to it as well. The name is symbolic of the Chinese words for coarseness of coat that are of three main types including the bear coat, horse coat and also brush coat.

The Chinese Shar Pei is well loved by everyone that comes in contact with it, and because of a calm disposition and confident manner, these are characteristics for which the Shar Pei is best known for. In addition, it also appears very dignified though it is also very aloof and will not easily become friends with strangers, and in fact, can also be given to being very aggressive sometimes.

The Chinese Shar Pei is also an excellent watchdog, though care must be taken by its owner to not allow it to get too aggressive to other dogs and even to other humans. However, it is a breed that likes to be around people and it is always a good idea before selecting a pup, to ensure that its breeder has allowed it a lot of opportunity to be around people so that it is already used to human company.

Thus, training the Shar Pei may prove to be harder than you bargained for, though once socialized, will make for an excellent and devoted companion.

The Chinese Shar Pei can easily be recognized from the wrinkles on its face and because many people find its hippopotamus-like looks very appealing, is a much sought after breed in spite of the fact that it was once on the list of rare breeds and despite the best efforts of the Chinese Communists to drive it to extinction.

Still, because of good fortune, it is now possible to own this aloof breed that has a unique appearance, though such a breed is still not the best bet for a first time dog owner and because it needs a fair bit of maintenance, may not always be the easiest dog to keep at home.

The Shar Pei is also prone to certain health problems and will often require preventive care, which a prospective owner must be aware of and be prepared to do. Nevertheless, the Chinese Shar Pei is loved and because of its possessive nature, makes a good family pet, and to ensure that you get yourself a good pet, try and obtain it from reputable breeders who will ensure that its temperament is sound, and who will have assessed it as being worthy of making an ideal pet dog.

No breed of dog works harder than the brave, majestic German Shepherd. As you read these words on your computer screen, all over the world German Shepherd dogs are guarding people and property, working alongside police and military officers in perilous conditions, guiding the blind, assisting the disabled, standing by for search and rescue missions, and relaxing with their owners as beloved pets. That’s how it has been since the breed originated as a herding dog.

German Shepherds tend to suffer from skin allergies, a problem that can be exacerbated by not paying attention to German Shepherd nutrition. You can help your dog avoid allergy problems by feeding your dog premium quality German Shepherd dog food recipes that you make yourself, in your kitchen, from ordinary ingredients available at any grocery store.

Providing for your German Shepherd’s care means you should provide the best dog food you can afford. An economical solution to high-priced premium dog foods is to make your own dog food. Start with five basic ingredients, and turn them into a collection of German Shepherd dog food recipes that your dog loves.

For the protein component, brown lean meat like ground turkey, chicken, beef, or lamb. The starch component can be met with wheat germ, breadcrumbs, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, cooked rice, or boiled noodles. Experiment with different vegetables to see what kind of vegetables your dog likes.

When putting together dog food recipes for your German Shepherd’s nutrition, use eggs or lean meat for the protein. There are dozens of ingredients you can use for the starch. Start with oatmeal, breadcrumbs, baked potatoes, steamed rice or boiled noodles. Try different cooked vegetables until you find one your dog likes. Some dogs like tomatoes while others like peas, carrots or celery. You’ll know you’ve found the right one for your German Shepherd’s nutrition when your dog begs for more!

Drastic changes in German Shepherd nutrition can cause health problems that require veterinary care for your family pet. Therefore, make any changes in your German Shepherd’s dog food gradually.

Ask your German Shepherd breeder for a sample of puppy food so you can continue to feed your new puppy the same dog food as the breeder fed it. Add a little bit of nutritious homemade food to the breeder’s food every day, until finally your dog is eating one hundred percent homemade food.

If your German Shepherd dog has health problems, you should consult with your veterinarian before making any changes to your dog’s diet. Your veterinarian will advise you whether you can safely change the diet of a dog that is being treated for a medical condition or has been diagnosed with a medical disorder.

A German Rottweiler is simply a dog that is born in Germany while the American Rottweiler is born in the United States. But the two forms of Rottweiler’s do have a few big differences. After June 1998 the biggest difference between the German Rottweiler and the American Rottweiler is that the German Rottweiler has a tail. However, the two breeds are nearly identical in standard aside from the tail. So don’t be fooled by a backyard breeder who tries to claim that the size, heads, bone and temperament of Rottweilers are different between the German and American breeds.

The German Rottweiler comes from the old breed of Roman drover dogs and the modern Rottweiler breed originally started in Germany. Today many of the Rottweilers are still bred in Germany and many U.S. bred dogs are imported from Germany. The method of registration, tracking and breeding is the biggest difference between the two forms of Rottweilers. When it comes to appearance there isn’t much difference.

In the United States two purebred dogs can be bred and the litter registered with the American Kennel Club. However, in Germany only the breed warden can approve the breeding of two dogs. This breed warden is a representative of the national Rottweiler club known as ADRK (the official German kennel club), which personally oversees and approves litters. A litter cannot be registered without the warden’s approval.

In order for a German Rottweiler to be bred they must meet specific criteria. Included in these criteria is an obedience test, hip and elbow clearances, a conformation evaluation that includes weights, measurements and proportions and a written evaluation by an ADRK judge and a temperament test.

If a dog is still bred after they fail a test then their offspring can never be registered. An annual book contains the information of every dog along with the ADRK database which records all registered Rottweilers in Germany from the point or birth until death.

Although whether the dog is German Rottweiler or an American Rottweiler getting a top quality dog is always a balance of genetics, pedigrees, knowledge, experience and little bit of trial and error. What really makes the difference between the American and German Rottweiler is the individual person’s breeding program.

Breeders will focus their litters on specific areas including working ability, soundness and genetic health, temperament and finally structure and type. Although it is best to find a breeder that tries to breed all of these qualities in their dogs, it does not always happen that way.

A lot of breeders claim to have German Rottweilers when they are really just backyard breeders. Therefore it is important that you ask to see a breeders’ certification and then check it before you purchase a dog from any breeder. Carefully read the breeders code of ethics and make sure you are getting a dog from a reputable breeder rather than a backyard breeder.

If anyone asks you why you bought a Golden Retriever there might be varieties of reasons that you would like to consider as a reason. But obviously, one among them must be the beauty and elegance of its golden hair. Unfortunately there are a whole host of reasons that may cause an unusual shedding of hair in a Golden Retriever, and certainly Golden Retriever allergies are most significant of them. Flea allergies, atopy, food allergies and contact allergies are the most common forms.

Flea allergies, also referred to as skin inflammation, occurs due to an allergic reaction to flea saliva. If this happens to your dog, the first thing you will notice on his body is a small red papule, which is gradually changed into a crust. The commonly affected areas are lower back, back legs, hind legs, upper thighs and belly areas. Flea allergies is one of the most common forms of skin allergies and when you find your dog is excessively scratching and itching, you can consider this as the primary symptom of Golden Retriever allergies.

Golden Retriever allergies for flea reaction are most commonly identified when the affected areas of the dog become hairless, the skin becomes thick and the color changes into a dark shade. If the Golden Retriever is allergic to flea bites, only one or two bites can make things worse. The only available and effective treatment of flea infection includes controlling flea inhabitants, both on the dog as well as in the external environment. Thanks to the advancement of medical science, many products have been formulated which can effectively combat against flea allergies and reduce the incidence.

Atopy occurs as a result of inhalation or absorption of harmful chemicals or substances from the environment. When it occurs, different areas of the dog’s body including groin, feet, underarm and face get affected. Common symptoms may include itching and scratching, redness, rawness, skin thickening and crusting. The infection may spread to ear also. Fungal spores, pollen, cat dander, weeds and grasses are the most common factors for atopy. Antihistamines, antibiotics, cortisone, shampooing and spraying are common modes of treatment.

Likewise any other dogs, the Golden Retriever is not free from food allergies. Symptoms of food allergies roughly resemble the symptoms of atopy, although there are a lot of differences in the root of the problem. Dairy, soy beef, wheat and some poultry products may contribute to food allergy for some dogs including the Golden Retriever.

Golden Retriever allergies of this type can only be diagnosed if you change the entire diet of the dog. You need to continue the newly designed diet for not less than eight weeks. If you find any significant symptoms, you may reach your conclusion.

On the other hand, contact allergies are mostly prevalent among Golden Retrievers having other forms of allergies like fleabites or atopy. In such cases, some of the areas become hairless, and the dog attracts a contact allergy.

Paw, underarms and the belly are mostly affected by contact allergy. Different chemicals used in carpet cleaning, grasses, polishes, waxes, and pollens are the common contributors of contact allergy.

by Rebecca Foxton

The top names in pet flea control are Frontline, Advantage, Revolution and Bio-Spot.

These on-the-spot type treatments for dog and cat flea problems all provide one month of complete protection.

Imidacloprid is the key ingredient in Advantage Flea that works to destroy the flea’s nervous system, rendering the flea paralyzed and quickly ending its life.

Within 12 hours of application, 98-100 percent of fleas are dead.

Brands like Frontline flea and Advantage flea killers have almost instant results and long lasting protection.

If you have this treatment available, your animal shouldn’t suffer from flea discomfort.

All you need to do is choose the best dog or cat flea medication for your situation.

External parasites that live off of the blood of mammals, reptiles, and birds are often referred to as mites and ticks.

While there are 5 species of ticks in North America, the America dog tick is the most widely known.

Now for the scary stuff: Ticks are only second to mosquitoes in transmitting diseases to humans.

Ticks can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, equine encephalitis, and ehrlichiosis.

They also spread diseases amongst livestock, as well as our beloved pets.

Another type of mite living in the Rocky Mountains is the wood tick.

Dog tick treatments include tick collars and dogs’ flea/tick shampoos.

In order for tick control to be effective during tick season, ticks should be checked for and removed completely if found.

If you are not careful, part of the tick may be left in the wound, increasing the likelihood of infection.

Heartworms are life threatening internal parasites that are transmitted by mosquitoes.

The parasites go through several stages before becoming adults.

Once adult, the heart worms travel to the heart to live off the blood supply.

Symptoms like coughing and difficulty in breathing may ensue, and the outcome of an untreated heartworm infestation is the heart failure of the host animal.

No owner would like to see their pet die of this terrible parasitic disease, fortunately treatment is available if the disease is caught early enough.

One treatment available for dogs that also takes care of hookworms and ascarid infections is Interceptor.

Another common infection is kennel cough.

Dogs are very susceptible to this highly contagious form of bronchitis, hence the name, as it can spread in areas where dogs are kept in close proximity.

Fortunately, kennel cough can be treated with antibiotics and prevented altogether by a timely vaccination for canine adenovirus, distemper, parainfluenza, and bordetella.

The time has come to bring a Boston Terrier into your family and you have decided that you want to deal with a Boston Terrier breeder so that you know what you are getting. However, like any other industry, there are fake Boston Terrier breeders out there that are trying to take advantage of unknowing owners. You want to make sure you avoid a fake Boston Terrier breeder or else you may get an unhealthy pet that could rack up huge vet bills on you and cause you and your family to make difficult decisions.

One tell tale sign of whether or not a Boston Terrier breeder is legitimate or not is if they offer you pet insurance on your Boston Terrier to extend to after the sale. Be sure you get this guarantee in writing as many dishonest Boston Terrier breeders will promise you insurance and then there will be nothing when you go to use it. Insurance companies give breeders free pet insurance to extend to six weeks after you have purchased your dog in the hopes you will be inspired to buy a pet insurance extension so it is no expense to a legitimate breeder.

When you have your new Boston Terrier home from the Boston Terrier breeder’s you and your breeder should not be losing contact with each other. A good breeder will be available to an owner at all times for consultation and to answer any questions that may come up. If you are calling your Boston Terrier breeder and they don’t answer the phone, don’t return your calls, or will not answer your questions then the chances are that you have yourself a fake breeder.

For first time Boston Terrier owners the breeders are an invaluable resource in finding out the correct care and feeding instructions for your new pet. The legitimate breeders build their business based on their good reputation and it is important for them to be as helpful as possible. The good breeders will send home samples of food that should be fed to your new Boston Terrier so that you know what you are supposed to be feeding your dog. If your breeder is not offering any care or feeding instructions then you probably have a fake breeder.

There is nothing more important to your breeder for his business than his reputation for providing quality animals and being as professional as possible.

A breeder becomes successful based on a helpful and professional reputation and this is just one of the above and beyond services any legitimate breeder will offer.

There really is not a lot you can do if you begin to realize you have been duped by a fake Boston Terrier breeder. You can report them to the American Kennel Club or whatever breeder registry they are listed with in the hopes that no one else gets scammed by the breeder and then report him to the local chapter of the humane society so that any potential cruelty can be investigated.

But aside from suing there is not much you can do and that is why you should never buy a Boston Terrier from a breeder that is not in good standing with the American Kennel Club.

There is really one distinct variation between the black Pomeranian and the regular Pomeranian and that is the black Pomeranian is black. The black Pomeranian is a very sturdy little dog whose legs are in direct proportion to its body. This is by no means a wimpy little dog. It has a medium size bone structure and is strong and staunch. The outercoat of the black Pomeranian is short and coarse and the undercoat is long and coarse which pushes the outercoat to stand up straight.

The outer coat of the black Pomeranian is short and coarse, while the undercoat is coarse but much longer and pushes the outercoat straight up. This can sometimes give the black Pomeranian a look of a guard dog. This beautiful coat should be groomed often to maintain its luster.

The black Pomeranian is a very active dog and is considered by most to be a bossy dog. They are extremely vivacious and very energetic. They are also very nosy dogs who get themselves into trouble quite regularly because of this nosy attribute. Their tails are set high and curl around to lay flat on the dogs back.

Black Pomeranians are energetic and vivacious dogs. They are nosy dogs and can be quite humorous because of this curiosity. The black Pomeranian ranges in size from four to seven pounds and are typically very short dogs with sturdy legs. They have tails that are set high and curl around to lay flat on their back. Although small, these dogs are not brittle dogs. They need to be exercised daily and going for walks will make your black Pomeranian much more pleasant to be around.

The black Pomeranian is very popular and usually the first pups to be sold. Some feel it is the uniqueness of the coat color which makes them so popular. These dogs should be exercised daily and if living in an apartment should be walked twice a day.

The black Pomeranian is a very intelligent dog and should be trained with consistency. These dogs want to be trained because they want to please their owners. Because of their pleasant temperament black Pomeranians make great pets.

The black Pomeranian is one of the most popular of the breed. The only difference between the black Pomeranian and the red and brown Pomeranian is the color. History records them hundreds of years ago in Eastern Europe and even further back in Iceland.

They make great companion dogs in any environment. They definitely love their family and want to be lap dogs. They will be very protective of any children in their home and make great watch dogs. What this dog lacks in size he makes up for in looks and personality. He is one of the more beautiful breeds and has been a member of the American Kennel Club since 1900.

Throughout your dog’s training, there is nothing quite as effective as positive reinforcement by means of a treat. It doesn’t really matter how much you love you dog, or how much your dog loves you; a treat is the perfect reward for a job well done.

However, instead of reinforcing a job well done, snacks filled with additives and empty calories can contribute to health and behavioral issues. This can happen in the case of humans as well.

Available in beef, cod, chicken, liver, and salmon fillets. Wellness Pure Rewards contain 95% meat and are grain and wheat free with no artificial additives, meaning a healthful dog treat.

Etta Says! Freeze-Dried Treats use human grade ingredients freeze dried to preserve freshness, aroma and most of all taste. Taste the winning flavor of Etta Says Liver Treats as voted by CityDog Magazine readers.

If your dog is overweight, or loves treats to eat way too many treats, try Zukes Mini Naturals. You will earn everlasting gratitude from your dog when you give him these two calorie Mini Naturals that are nutritious and deliciously flavored like chicken, peanut butter, or salmon.

Another tiny type are Dogswell Minis Functional Dog Treats with a lo fat high protein content and easily digestible ingredients.

Solid Gold Jerky Treats, which are specifically made for older dogs and puppies, contain beef, lamb, or turkey, brown rice, oats, tapioca, cinnamon, and rosemary as active ingredients.

A product specifically designed for puppies is Wellness Just For Puppy Treats, with healthy ingredients such as blueberries, flaxseed, salmon and carrots in a scrumptious snack.

Zukes PowerBones have been specially formulated to be a cut above mere jerky/biscuit snacks. With nutrition based on vets advice and scientific research, PowerBones have been developed as a power and nutrient source for active and performance canines.

Arizona has created a task force to help manage and monitor how Arizona pet shops take care of the animals they are selling. Just because you are selling those animals, and the fact that they are not your pet does not mean that they don’t deserve to be treated humanely. Without a sense of responsibility Arizona pet shop owners might neglect their animals.

But not only Arizona pet shops; as shocking as it may seem animal grooming establishments, breeding facilities, kennels, and even animal shelters are common violators of animal rights. Making these people legally responsible to fully implement laws against animal cruelty is the best action to be taken.

Follow These Simple Rules

An Arizona pet shop must have a resident veterinarian or currently have a veterinarian on its pay roll to on call and to check up on its animals regularly. This is to ensure that the animals are healthy and is in proper care. Not only will a sick pet be a danger to itself but also to the owners. There is also a danger of causing an epidemic among animals.

It is good for an Arizona pet shop to know the history and background of the animals they are selling. They must have the health and medical records as well as the breeding history of that animal upon request of the animal task force or the consumer. It is also important to remember that although an Arizona pet shop’s aim is to gain profit, never misrepresent an animal’s breed, health or pedigree as this is punishable by law.

For Arizona pet shops that sell puppies and cats they must post the puppy lemon law in their establishments. Non profit establishment however are not required to do so. Non-profit establishments are humane societies or rescue groups.

If encase the need for euthanasia arises, an Arizona pet shop must go about it in the most humane way and the acceptable way as according to the task force. Never neglect the needs of your animals. As Arizona pet shop owners you should also be aware that cats and dogs cages should never be place in close proximity with each other.

In the beginning the task force sent out letter notices to all Arizona pet shop owners that there is now a law governing body to implement laws against animal cruelty. These days the task force goes into Arizona pet shops without prior notice; a surprise inspection to see if the pet shops really take care of their animals.

by Michelle E. Arthur

Did you know that training an adult Pug is actually a shared effort between you, your family and the Pug? You might think that a full grown Pug who may have even been potty trained in the past can just as easily adjust to being in your home. This is not the case. It takes time and commitment for a Pug to get used to the way your home is run and to learn your home’s elimination schedule.

These types of high expectations for your new Pug are just unrealistic. A Pug needs to be able to make adjustments to its environment and understand that you will not tolerate peeing on the carpet. This is especially true if its previous owner did not seem to mind that sort of behavior.

Don’t make the mistake of assuming that because he’s an adult Pug that he’ll just “know” what to do. Start with him as if he were a puppy and gradually teach him the routine of your home’s pet potty schedule.

You probably need to start with crate training or restriction to a bathroom. Then set a schedule for potty breaks. Adult Pugs are very picky about finding a potty place outside that’s apart from where they play, just as they don’t like to potty near where they sleep or eat.

Help him find that place in your yard or outside when walking and return him there for subsequent potty breaks. You have to monitor the potty breaks for several weeks to learn your Pug’s elimination patterns.

It is also important to set a schedule for feedings in the morning and in the evening. Your Pug may have never been on such a set schedule before so this will take some time for adjusting. You may have heard the common saying, “you can’t teach an old Pug new tricks”. In truth, age does not matter, it is consistency that counts.

Your Pug may have also come from an abusive household. Even things like yelling or smacking the Pug with a newspaper could have caused your pet a lot of fear. This is why you need to be patient and build the Pug’s confidence so that he understands your intentions and can make adjustments without being afraid.

Many accidents will occur in the house so be prepared to clean up after your Pug and move on. You can’t just assume that training a grown Pug will be a piece of cake compared to training a puppy. Both young and older Pugs will need time to adjust to new surroundings. You have to be firm while you are training but show a little affection so that your Pug knows the benefits of good behavior.

An older male Pug may be accustomed to marking his territory by urinating on it. This is an instinctive behavior for male Pugs - you aren’t going to break him of it without breaking his spirit or having him neutered.

All puppies love to chew on just about anything they can get their teeth into. Sadly, puppy’s chewing can cost you lots of money to repair damaged furniture and personal belongings. With a few simple tips and tricks, you can keep your puppy’s off of your valuables.

Puppies are so dog-gone lovable. I admit that I am so entertained when my puppy chews on a sock. He wags his little tail playfully, does his little puppy-growl, and then chews until it lies in shreds on the floor. However, my puppy suddenly becomes a lot less lovable when it is MY sock he is chewing on. I would venture to guess that the largest expense incurred by puppy owners is as a result of replacing or repairing chewed up belongings. Naturally, a puppy will chew the most when you either aren’t home or you aren’t looking.

To curb the chewing habit you need to puppy-proof your home. You may not like it, but keep puppy confined to areas of your home where puppy can’t get into too much trouble. Just like with a small child, don’t leave your puppy unattended - even when you are home. Invest in a baby gate to prevent him from wandering around if it becomes necessary.

Keep your valuables and collectibles out of puppys reach. Coffee tables need to be free of magazines, books, and yes, even the remote control. Store these things in higher places where puppy can’t reach. Don’t forget, if your puppy gets a hold of marbles, coins, or other small objects, he could choke while chewing on them! Be sure these small things are picked up and out of puppy’s reach at all times.

Puppies get so excited at times and when puppy is excited, he chews - a lot. This is puppy’s way of releasing his pent up energy. Keep in mind that your puppy doesn’t know when he’s done something wrong unless you tell him. When puppy does chew on your belongings, resist the urge to spank him. Good puppy owners know that their puppy has chewed up something, that he may very well be responding to your behavior. When you leave and make a big deal out of it, puppy will get all worked up. Puppy doesn’t know the proper way to release his excitement, so, puppy chews.

Invest in many types of puppy chew toys. Puppy chew toys give puppy something safe to chew on. You may have seen those nylon rope puppy toys in stores. These are great! These puppy chew toys help to keep puppy’s teeth clean while he is chewing to his hearts content.

Don’t forget, if you stay calm, puppy will most likely stay calm, too. Try to resist the urge to make a big deal to puppy when you are leaving. When you come home, forget the dramatics, and be as calm as you possibly can.

Puppies are highly-excitable animals. This excitement can cause that adorable puppy of yours to chew on everything in sight. To avoid destruction, stay calm around your puppy and remember; this too shall pass. With consist behavior and discipline, training your puppy to only chew on his chew toys will pay off.

by Michelle Adams

The growing popularity of beagles has opened a vast market to fill that leaves honest beagle breeders struggling to keep up. This unanswered demand for these sweet little dogs has opened the doors for dishonest beagle breeders who produce puppies en masse for pet stores around the country. Even pet storeowners who take the initiative to attempt to investigate the breeders, from whom they get their pups, are often duped into buying animals that are less than exceptional.

For anyone that is a would-be beagle owner, it is absolutely vital that you understand the conditions that these puppy mills breed their dogs into. Even the most inexperienced beagle breeder would be horrified to learn how rarely new blood is brought into these mills, and at how often the bitches are forced to be bred. In this article, I will attempt to show you why it is so important that you only purchase a beagle from a well-respected beagle breeder, as opposed to a pet store that is most likely supplied by one of these puppy mills.

The biggest issue with a dishonest breeder is that they will often continue to interbreed their dogs, so as to produce the largest amount of pups. Since beagles are prone to certain genetic health issues to begin with, this is a very dangerous practice.

Puppy mills will often breed their females every time they are in season, simply to continue to meet the growing demand for new pups. As a female beagle’s system is weakened each time she has a litter, this often results in unhealthy - or even dying - pups being delivered to the pet stores.

It is a sad shame that so many pet storeowners are unable to distinguish an honest beagle breeder from a dishonest one. But so many pet storeowners are simply concerned with keeping up with the growing demand for beagle pups, that they never take the time to research the conditions the dogs they are buying come from.

An honest beagle breeder will generally do as much research about the person who wants to buy a pup from them, as you should be doing about the breeders. It is not uncommon for an honest beagle breeder to refuse to sell a pup to someone, simply because they do not believe that the person is ready for the responsibility of taking care of a beagle in the way they deserve. But you don’t have to be one of them.

An honest beagle breeder will never sell their pups to a pet store, preferring to keep them in a warm and comfortable kennel where they will receive only the very best in care and medical treatment. And an honest beagle breeder will be very picky as to whom they will sell a pup.

By refusing to buy pups from pet stores supplied by puppy mills, you can rest assured that you are doing your part to ensure a long and healthy future for these little dogs.

by Lacy Holly

We have all experienced this at one point in time or another. A dog that barks almost 24/7 and doesn’t seem to have any end in sight. What makes this scenario even worse is when you are the owner of the dog. You feel worried and even annoyed by all the noise yet you have no clue how to stop a barking dog on your own.

Thankfully all dogs bark for a reason, even though we may not always know right off the bat what reason that is. More often than not, your dog is barking to warn you of strangers that are walking near your home.

However, if your dog is a chronic barker there are different causes you need to look at in order to stop barking dogs. Many barking dog issues stem from boredom. You dog may be so desperate for some attention, that he will bark and bark and bark just to get your attention.

Also, be sure that your dog has plenty of food and water as hunger or thirst could also be causing your dog to bark. Also check the outside temperature. Is it extremely hot or cold making your dog uncomfortable? If so, look into making him an inside dog or at least getting him a decent sized dog house or something that can serve as a shelter from weather.

You can usually stop barking dogs by just making sure they have everything they need, spending high quality time when you are home and providing some nice toys for them to play with when you are not around.

Dog obedience training will also make a huge difference as you will be able to give your dog a command when necessary that lets him know when to stop barking. Plus, dog training will also help you and your dog develop a stronger relationship and bond.

Be considerate of your neighbors. Having been a neighbor of a chronic barker myself I know how stressful it can be to hear a barking dog all day long and not be able to do much of anything about it. If your neighbor comes to you and asks you to do something about your dog, don’t be defensive. You must realize that your dog may act differently when you are a work.

Also remember that we don’t want to stop dog barking all together. Barking is your dog’s main form of communication and we don’t want to take that away. The main goal is to make sure his needs are met and then teach him when it is appropriate to bark and when it is not acceptable.

How can you train your dog with a DVD? Can you begin training an adorable little puppy when it’s still quite young and somehow have a well-trained dog after a while? Or if your dog is older, could you teach it to sit, to stay, to come, to lie down, and to walk on a loose leash?

The answer is evident: maybe.

It depends on you. The dog or puppy is willing to learn, and it’s not hard to get a really good DVD on dog training. Do you want to do this enough that you will really get around to it? If you will, you’ll find that a DVD can motivate as well as teach you what you need to do.

Here’s how to proceed: figure out when you can do short dog training sessions. Ideally you would do them three to five times a day, but even twice a day will be a good start, perhaps right before the dog’s morning and evening meals. You want to do short bits of training because the dogs learn more effectively than if you tried to do everything just once a day for a longer period.

So if you are up for making a plan and carrying it out, you should do just fine at training your dog via DVD.

Is it better to use a DVD or to take a class?

In deciding whether to train your dog with a DVD or to take him to a class, one of the main factors is whether you can find a trainer nearby whose approach you like. Positive, pain-free methods work more effectively in training dogs, but many trainers learned their methods years ago and haven’t made the switch to the newer techniques. Also, of course, consider the cost and the timing of the classes.

If you do succeed in finding a good dog training class, go for it! The regular habit of training at the class and doing homework will stand you and the dog in good stead. But don’t rule out using a DVD as well. Dogs really do have fun learning, once they get the taste for it, and there is no limit to the fun you can have with your dog through training!

What DVD to Use in Training Your Dog?

Be sure to get a DVD using positive reinforcement methods. I was very pleased to find Train Your Dog: The Positive, Gentle Method, with Nicole Wilde and Laura Bourhenne. I had read some of Wilde’s books and was not surprised at the high quality of the program. It covers come, sit, stay, puppy training, and much more.

Prior to entering yur dog in an agility trial or fun match, try and attend one on your own. This will enable you to see how the event is organized and what is required as an entrant. As this will be your first time, do ensure you visit the Novice ring. Is your dog up to the standard of the others? If not, then maybe it would be wise to spend some more time on training your dog on the commands required. The majority of dog trials are held in the open with no fenced areas. If your dog cannot respond to the basic “Come” command, that could cause problems. It is far better if you are confident of your dog’s obedience.

Before entering make sure that you get a copy of the official rules and regulations. Ensure that you understand and can comply with them. It would be a pity to find yourself disqualified from your first trial because you were unaware of a condition.

You can find out about agility trials and fun matches by talking to your dog trainer. Maybe there is a local club in your town or neighborhood where you could find out more. If they have a website there will be announcements made, maybe even join an online forum and gleam more information.

Trials and fun runs are long events that can last anywhere from eight to twelve hours. If your dog is competing, he or she will only be performing for about five minutes of that time, so you will need to have their pen or crate ready to keep them safe and relaxed. You will also need some sun protection of your own (a canopy-type tent is perfect) and a comfortable folding chair. It should go without saying that you will need a good supply of water (for both of you) and dog treats (you’d be surprised how many competitors forget them).

If you can, see if you are able to volunteer at the event as a pole setter. You’ll learn a lot of the tips and tricks of agility trials, and you’ll get to see the obstacles and courses up close. There will be a lot of information to learn, but don’t forget your dog. Make some time for you and your dog to relax, play a game and maybe meet some of the other dogs.

The dog agility trials use a scoring system called runs. These runs are based on the “fault count”. Fault count includes the course faults like knocking down a bar during a jump or exceeding the standard course time (SCT). The faults are also decided on the basis of competition level and course toughness. Keep a diary to track your dog’s progress. Try to get hold of a copy of the course to keep for future reference. This will be invaluable later as it will help to highlight any problems and allow you to deal with them effectively.

Does your dog have behavior problems? I don’t mean the ordinary things any dog owner can expect, such as a puppy who isn’t yet housetrained, a dog who loves to jump up on you when you return home, or other things of this sort. But if your dog does things which appear to you to be abnormal, you may be concerned or even worried.

Normally one of the first things dog owners do in a case like this is to learn more about dog training and apply it to their situation. They might do this through classes, trainers, books, or internet websites and forums. The quality of the advice found can be rather hit-and-miss, but often this approach is adequate and the behavior issue is solved, more or less.

A good next step is a vet exam to rule out all sorts of common or obscure ailments that you might never think of yourself. And if the vet should find that your dog is experiencing pain somewhere in his body, taking care of that could solve the behavior problem.

Consider how much exercise your dog gets. Is it really enough? In today’s world, few dog owners give their dogs enough exercise. If you and your buddy go out for long walks together, chances are you will both benefit. You may notice significant diminishment in behavior problems if your dog is tired out in this way.

Well, that’s all very well, but what if none of it stops the unwanted dog behaviors?

I once had a lengthy email correspondence with a dog owner who found herself in this situation. She had already tried everything I’ve described above, but none of it solved the problem of her large puppy attacking and biting her and her children. She was an outstanding sleuth and ultimately she triumphed. Who’d have guessed that the beet pulp often used in commercial dog food was triggering allergic reactions? Once she only used dog food without that ingredient, the puppy became the dog of their dreams, sweet and loving.

An allergy to beet pulp isn’t at all that common, but the point to keep in mind is that dog food can and often does have an effect on dog behavior. We often think this way about people; for example, it’s well known that when children eat a lot of sugar, they may be hyperactive. But most people don’t think this way regarding their dogs.

In general, veterinarians are not particularly well informed about the pros and cons of feeding dog foods that contain additives and other questionable ingredients. They received little training back in vet school and most are far too busy to explore the topic now. Also, if they sell dog food in their clinics, their inclination is going to be to trust that they made a good choice of food to sell.

I’m happy to report that some veterinarians have made a specialty of studying these matters closely, as have some dog breeders. Their recommendations are to feed your dog homemade dog food within guidelines they provide.

By feeding a homemade diet to your dogs, you may well be enhancing not only their behavior but also their health. One breeder has seen the longevity of her dogs increase gradually over the more than thirty years that she has been developing a natural diet which she shares freely on her website.

Particularly for dogs with behavior or health problems, an excellent step is to put them on homemade dog food. Stay with it for a while, and take note of what happens!

No matter where you live, you may run into dog aggression, and it may be caused by your dog. Sometimes it is between two dogs, whether neighbors or dogs in the same household. Sometimes it involves a dog attacking or biting a human, all too often a child. This article will give you three things you can do if you are dealing with an aggressive dog in your family. It will also provide you with a link to a resource that has much more information on this stressful situation.

The first thing to do if you have an aggressive dog is to manage his living arrangements. You need to create a situation where everyone is protected from further harm: you, your family, the dog, and any other people or dogs who come in contact with your dog.

You can do this partly by crating the dog at times. If he is not used to being put into a crate, you will have to coax him in with treats and monitor his being in the crate to be sure he doesn’t hurt himself (or the crate) trying to get out. Never leave a dog in a crate for an extremely long time.

If you are not using a crate, consider enclosing the dog in some part of your home, whether a dog kennel in your yard or a less-used room in your house. This is a good plan in addition to a crate, as well. If your problem is between two dogs you own, at least at first you will want to have them well separated. One door between them may be okay, but two doors makes it much easier for you to get around.

Second, get your dog to your veterinarian for a thorough check-up. Many times, the cause of aggression in a dog is pain. Veterinarians can find many possible causes that you might never think of, such as dental pain. If this is the case, once the pain is gone, the dog will be a much happier camper and the aggression may go away completely.

Third, keep a log of what incidents and near-misses occur. It is very easy for details to get jumbled in our memories, particularly around stressful matters like this. A small notebook, or just a paper and pencil kept handy, will come in very useful as you move into longer-term management and training routines.

Longer-term planning is the next step, or actually several steps. It may not be easy, but there have been studies done which show that when people who have an aggressive dog are diligent about care and training, the future is much rosier for the dog and all around him.

by Lacy Holly

Have you come home to find one too many of your designer shoes chewed up and have had it with dog chewing? Well you have certainly come to the right place.

This article is going to cover the reasons your dog chews in the first place and how you can stop your dog chewing troubles for good. Not a moment too soon right? At least for the sake for your favorite slippers.

First you need to come to grips with the fact that all dogs have a natural tendency to chew on things. At least you can rest assured in knowing that your dog isn’t trying to destroy your things or get back at you for not taking him on that walk yesterday.

Make sure you start taking action to stop dog chewing as quickly as you can because this little habit can become quite dangerous. Your dog chewing through an electrical wire is a big risk and can hurt him pretty bad.

At least we can narrow down the causes of your dog’s chewing habit to a few possible scenarios. One cause may be due to boredom. This will lead your dog to chew just to entertain himself. If you find this to be the case, make sure to give your dog plenty of safe chew toys.

Separation anxiety is another factor to consider. If you leave him home all day while you are gone or at work, at least turn on the radio or television to give him some company throughout the day.

Animal Planet would be the best channel don’t you think? This would help him feel as though he is not alone and he wont resort to dog chewing to make himself feel better.

If your dog is a puppy you are dealing with a whole new ball game, especially when your puppy is in the teething stage. This is a make it or break it stage as well. This is the point that your dog develops a dog chewing habit in the first place.

Fear can also cause your dog to chew on things. Make sure there is nothing that is causing your dog to be afraid or stressed out.

Try to eliminate anything that is scaring your dog from your home and make it as comfortable for him as possible while you are away.

Make sure to let your dog watch some television while you are out so he doesn’t feel so alone. If you get nothing else out of this article, remember that he is not chewing on your things out of anger or to upset you.

So deal with your dog chewing problem with patience and love and you will get results.

by Rosana Hart

In dog training simple commands are much easier for your dog or puppy to understand than more elaborate ones. You’ll learn this in any obedience training class, but getting the habit does sometimes take a while.

For instance, let’s say you want your dog to lie down. You say the command once but if the dog doesn’t immediately hit the floor, the temptation will be for you to say it again… and again. Sometimes dog owners will say something like “Hey, get down now! I already told you! You know what I mean!” All this language does not further the cause of obedience training.

What you are trying to do in using simple one-word commands is to create a habit in the dog. Canine behavior, like that of humans, has a lot of habitual aspects to it. When you train dogs with simple commands, they are easier for the animals to hear and recognize the meaning than if they have to pick out the words from your steady flow of speech.

Of course, dogs can pick out words that way if they want to, as anyone knows who has had a conversation with another human is which they said something like, “Shall we take Buddy to the park?” Buddy may easily pick out his name and perhaps the word “park.” The domestic dog has had a lot of practice in listening to human speech!

So your training will go best if you use simple dog training commands — which can also be described as cue words. That phrase bypasses the whole dominance issue, the idea that you have to always be the boss. While obedience is certainly necessary at times, in general the most satisfying dog training comes about when you and the dog are working as a team.

When you are starting to teach a puppy, that’s an important time to use simplicity in your words. Sit, come, stay, down… these words are tried and true training commands.

Incidentally, an all-too-common puppy behavior is to jump up on people. You will want a command to stop your dog from doing that. Since “down” means “go down to the floor,” that isn’t exactly what you need. A better word here is “Off!”

House training seems to be a major reason many people hesitate to get a family pet. Cats however rarely need much training. Just buy a litter box, add some cat litter, and oftentimes that’s all that is needed.

Most kittens already know how to use a box. Their mother has taught them. Your jobs are few. Keep the box clean, and let your cat know where it is, lest he find someplace else to do his business. The only problem is figuring out what type of litter is best to use for both your new pet and for your home.

If this is your first cat you’ll be a bit shocked when you see all the different types of litter now available. So how do you decide what’s best for you and your pet?

Cost will always come into play, and clay litter is probably the cheapest you can buy. It’s also been around a very long time. But clay does present some problems. It absorbs liquids and odors, which is good, but it will need to be changed more often than most litters. Surely you don’t want your home to have that foul cat waste odor. Clay can also cause problems if your kitten has allergies. When your cat scratches in his box, the dust will fly everywhere.

Clumping cat litter has quickly become the most popular. The litter works with the moisture in the waste, clumping up as soon as your cat goes. This is good for you because you don’t have to change out the entire box, you simply scoop out the clumps, then add more litter to replace what you just cleaned away. And although it won’t remove the smell, clumping litter does come in several different scents to help hide the odor. The problem here is that some cats tend to eat the clumps. You’ll have to watch your cat carefully to make sure this is not an issue.

Silica litters are some of the newest on the market. Silica has been used for years in the small packets you see in pill bottles or in your new pair of shoes. It’s used because it is a great moisture absorber, and silica crystals in your cat litter work much the same way. They are mixed with sand and water to easily absorb any liquids in your cat’s waste. You still have to scoop out the solid waste, and because it does not clump, it can be a bit messy. Another plus is that this litter is biodegradable, and simply returns to a sandy base when it decomposes.

Another biodegradable litter is paper litter, which is becoming very popular with environmental pet owners. This litter is made from pellets or recycled paper. In addition to being biodegradable, it is absorbent and is easy to carry around because it does not weigh very much.

Wood litters, in particular pine cat litter, are also biodegradable and quickly growing in popularity. Softwoods are great at absorbing liquids and odors. No chemicals are needed to help with the process meaning you get a more natural litter.

Once you decide on the type of litter you want to use, your cat will undoubtedly let you know if he agrees with your selection. Some cats for example don’t like the smell of pine litter. Others won’t use silica because the crystals don’t feel good on their paws. In either case, your cat will tell you whether or not he approves by either going or not going in his box.

The key is to become as informed as possible about all the different options. Then you can make an intelligent selection. Of course you’ll still have to run it by your cat to see if he approves.

When using any kind dog training tips whether they be for free or not it is important that you remember that dog’s will lose interest in things very quickly.
